BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CENTRE
The Bishop Ackon Memorial Christian Eye Centre is a bona fide property of the Anglican Diocese of Cape Coast established as part of the Church’s social ministry within the larger mission ministry of the Church.
It began as a collaborative effort between the Diocese and the Christian Eye Ministry in the USA. The Centre was officially opened for public service on July 4, 1987 using a rented premise at Aboom as its location. In 1992, the Centre moved to its permanent and present location at the Light Industrial Area, North OLA in Cape Coast. It is located adjacent to the Flowers Gay School off the Cape Coast – Takoradi Highway.
The Centre was registered on 5th February 1987 at the Registrar General’s Office under the Companies Code 1963 (ACT 179) as a Private Company Limited by Guarantee.
It operates under the regulation of the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HEFRA) of the Ministry of Health and is a member Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG).
The Centre has a three-tier governance structure that focuses on policy setting, policy implementation supervision and policy implementation.
Policy direction and focus is set by a Board of Guarantors headed by the Diocesan Bishop while a Board of Directors headed by an appointee of the Bishop to supervises policy implementation.
The Management Team headed by the Medical Director is responsible for implementing policies and reporting to the Board of Directors and the latter to the Board of Guarantors. Being a property and ministry wing of the mission of the Anglican Diocese of Cape Coast, the Board of Directors report to the Diocesan Standing Committee and the Diocesan Synod.
